He was born March 28, 1761, in Louisa County, Virginia. He enlisted while living in Louisa County, in Virginia troops, in 1777 under Captain John Cox and Colonel Winslow. In 1779 he enlisted again under Captain Benjamin Timberlake and Colonel Taylor. In 1780 he enlisted again under captain Richard Philips and Colonel Harrison.
