OBITUARY OF MARTHA JANE DIGGS MALLORY, 1887 - Louisa Co. VA In Memoriam, Mrs. Martha Jane Mallory, Consort of Mr. Thomas H. Mallory and daughter of Mr. John and Mrs. Elizabeth Diggs, was born in Louisa County, Virginia, July 3, 1827, was married to Mr. Mallory November 7, 1850, and died of heart disease in her native county June 20, 1887, aged 59 years, 11 months and 17 days. Early in life she made a public profession of faith in Christ and united with Missionary Baptist Church at Bybee's Road Church, located not far from the scenes of her childhood days. In this Church she lived a most active, consistent Christian life to the day of her death. She was ever ready and willing to fill her place and do her part in all the enterprises of her church. Her husband was an ardent member of the M.E. Church, South, but she never opposed him in his church relations and christian duties; but the rather, she was energetic in assisting him to the extent of her ability. Her house and hospitality were ever at the service of the ministers and members of her husband's church in common with those of her own, as many way-worn itenerant preachers can testify. Mrs. Mallory was a devoted, faithful wife, and in stages, affectionate mother, a kind, obliging neighbor, and a patient, cheerful sufferer. She gave birth to four children, only one of which survived the throes of the child-bed. Her illness was somewhat protracted and lingering, of the kind, and her sufferings were severe, but her mind remained clear until she went hence. She spoke of death with composure, and rejoiced in the near prospect of release from suffering and a home in the glory-world. Her death was a triumph. The bereaved husband, now left in the loneliness of widowerhood, must receive untold comfort with the assurance that his devoted wife is taken from the evil to come, and is reaping the reward of the righteous, "where the wicked cease from troubling and where the weary are at rest." We can but commend him and all the bereaved to God and to the Word of His Grace, which is able to build them up, and to give then an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Go, brother and cast upon Jesus Your troubles and all your cares; His love and compassion now frees us, For our cares and our burdens he bears. S.T.M.
