Seay Cemetery Location: Southeast of Rehoboth, Virginia, 3.7 miles on Route #622, thence southwest 2.9 miles on Route #634, and about 100 yards east on private road. Lunenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1797. OWNERS: Samuel G. Hubbard, 1918. DESCRIPTION: This neglected old cemetery is not enclosed. In it, there is one very large tulip poplar tree with a tall undergrowth of hollies, cedars, pines and dogwood. There are a good many graves marked with rough stones, having no inscriptions, while there are two white marble monuments with inscriptions. Both of these are in good condition, being only slightly discolored. The larger monument was erected to the memory of John I. Boswell, and his two wives. It is a large square column about five feet high on a double iron base, which is about eighteen inches high. The other monument is a broad upright slab about three feet high, having an iron base also. This was erected to the memory of Bettie Weslie, wife of Dr. J. J. Almand. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: John I. Boswell, son of Joseph Colgate Boswell and Elizabeth Elliott, of Amelia County, Virginia, was born in Gloucester County, Virginia. He was a Revolutionary soldier, having served as a private in the First Virginia Regiment. He was twice married in 1784. His second wife was Barbara Walker, whom he married October 27, 1798. He was the grandfather of Dr. Lewis Boswell, a native of Lunenburg County, who after graduating in medicine, located in the county, then removed to Greenwood, Mississippi, and later invented an airplane. Dr. J. J. Almand, the husband of Bettie Weslie, was a prominent physician of Lunenburg County, and related to the Boswell family.
