Seay Cemetery Location: Northwest of Kenbridge, Virginia, 3.5 miles. On Route #653, 3 miles northwest to the junction of Routes #653 and #651, thence .5 of a mile north on Route #651, thence about 100 yards north on a private road, east side. Lunenburg County, Virginia DATE: About 1843. OWNERS: Haynie Hatchett, 1820, Deed Book 25, pages 136 and 146. Heirs of Haynie Hatchett, 1843, Will Book 12, page 157. Descendants of Haynie Hatchett, present owners, 1856, Deed Book 36, page 105. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is about thirty feet square, and is enclosed by an iron fence. The enclosure is thickly covered with honeysuckles. Four graves are covered with marble tablets. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The tombstone inscriptions which are as follows: Sacred to the Memory of Haynie Hatchett Born August 31, 1779 and died at his residence Woodhill, in the County of Lunenburg on the 1st of November 1843, aged 64 years, 2 months and 1 day. Mens Sibi Consoia Recti Sacred to the Memory of Frances T. Hatchett Relict of Haynie Hatchett Born January 8, 1796 and died at Woodhill in the County of Lunenburg the 8th of January, 1856 Aged sixty years. Surviving her husband for a period of 12 years. She discharged the double duties devolved upon her with a degree of fidelity, promptness and affection, which has left a most enduring monument in the hearts of her Children. In memory of Emma P. Hayes wife of George Hays and Daughter of Haynie and Frances Hatchett Born at Woodhill in the County of Lunenburg, on the 9th day of August 1835, and died at Union Level, in the County of Mecklenburg, on the first day of October, 1856 Aged 20 years, 1 month and 22 days This monument is erected by her Husband, to perpetuate her amiable character. Sacred to the memory of Indianna S. wife of George Hayes and Daughter of Haynie and Frances Hatchett Born in the County of Lunenburg, September 7, 1830 Died in the County of Mecklenburg August 20, 1858 This tomb is erected by her husband Sacred to the memory of Mary Frances Wife of Charles H. Carter of Nottoway County and daughter of Haynie and Frances Hatchett of Lunenburg County Born September 5, 1821 Died September 18, 1859 Living in the fear of God, death found her ready, and her end was peace; In memory of her many virtues, this monument is erected by her husband Our Father and Mother Nathaniel Matthews Born April 2, 1809 Died November 5, 1877 Aged 68 years Sarah J. Hatchett Beloved wife of Nathaniel Matthews Born June 14, 1826 Died March 11, 1874 Aged 48 years I am the Resurrection and the Life John Matthews Born September 10, 1796 Died March 1861 Aged 65 years Peace to his ashes This cemetery is still owned by descendants of Haynie Hatchett. When the heirs of his estate sold the property in 1856, to their brother-in-law, Nathaniel Matthews, they reserved to their heirs and assigns one fourth of an acre in the garden as a burying ground, with full and absolute right to ingress, egress and regress to and from the same. Deed Book 36, page 105. Nathaniel Matthews married Sarah Jones Hatchett, daughter of Haynie and Frances Jones Hatchett, February 10, 1849. John Matthews, mentioned in the inscription on a monument, was a brother of Nathaniel Matthews, who lived in State of Texas, and owned there a plantation of more than two thousand acres of valuable land. He died at “Woodhill” in 1861, while visiting his brother, Nathaniel Matthews, and bequeathed his entire estate to him. This property is still owned by the grand children of Nathaniel Matthews. Haynie Hatchett, the original owner of the nearby home, “Woodhill”, was probably the first member of the Hatchett family to be buried in the cemetery, as indicated by the inscriptions on the monuments. He was the son of William Hatchett, of Lunenburg County, and April 23, 1816, married Frances Tanner Jones, daughter of Peter and Jane Stokes Jones. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Mrs. Edwin M.
