(1937) DESCRIPTION: There are large pines, cedars, tulip poplars and dogwoods, with a thick undergrowth of bushes in this unenclosed cemetery. There are many graves covered with periwinkle and honeysuckles, most of which are marked with rough stones without inscriptions. There are also several monuments of recent years. Over one of the old graves is a marble table, resting on five square columns two feet high. It is very much discolored, but has inscriptions. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscription as follows: Sacred to the memory of Ann S. Overton She was the daughter of Peter and Jane Jones Born 27th day of August, 1792 Died August 1, 1834 (Other part of inscription illegible.) The cemetery took its name from the home, “locust Grove” which was situated a short distance in front of it, and was destroyed by fire about 15 years ago. This was the home of Peter Jones, who was raised on Deep Creek, in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Jane Stokes, a daughter of David Stokes, (the elder) of Lunenburg County. From the eleven children of this couple, there are many descendants, a number of them being in Lunenburg County. A notice of Peter Jones’ death is recorded in Rev. John Cameron’s Register of Baptisms and Funerals For Cumberland Parish as follows: Peter Jones Sen. died the 24th day of January and was buried the 7th day of April 1815. Ann Stokes Jones, daughter of Peter Jones and his wife, Jane Stokes, married William G. Overton, of Amelia County, Virginia about 1817. They lived in Lunenburg County.
