Keysville Dec. 14, 1797 Judge Geo. C. Orgain Lunenburg Co. Dear Judge, Mr. J. J. Bentley of your county, has come to me for examination for a state pension. I will say that in my opinion he is disabled from earning a living by manual labor and has he is reported to have been a good old Soldier, I think he should have a pension but I am unwilling to certify that I can find any visible evidence of wounds to so disable him. I only know him when I see him and he lives some distance from me, so his wounds and the extent of _________ disability will have to be established by his own _____ and on the testimony of his comrades(?) and neighbors, which I reckon he can do without trouble. (cannot read signature) This is to certify that J. J. Bentley, Private in Company B, 22nd Virginia Battalion, was wounded 13th day of December 1862 by a shell and sent back to the hospital at the Battle of Fredricksburg.
