    I do hereby certify that Edward Lewis, soldier in actual service of the 
State, when on duty in the city of Williamsburg in the year 1777 received a 
wound accidentally, which occasioned the loss of several fingers on the right 
hand with the ___ of the hand.  Given under my hand this 28 day of June, 1787.

    On examination of the above mentioned person find his right hand in greatly 
cut away and what fingers remain are of very little service so that he has no 
benefit of that limb and it is totally disabled from obtaining  a living by hard 
Labour.  He appears to be about twenty eight years of age.

    I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that Edward Lewis, aged 
about 28 years, late a private in the Lunenburg County Militia, was wounded in 
in the service of the United States and that he is allowed the sum of 15 pounds 
yearly, commencing from the first of Jan. 1786.  Given under my hand as Governor 
of the Commonwealth of VA, at Richmond, this 13th day of June, 1787.
