Bufort by which his right hand was amputated and the arm of his left considerably injured by a blast of a ( rest very unreadable, but signed by James Wood, late Brig. Gen'l) June 12, 1787 (received several dangerous cuts by a sword on his hand. I do with advice of the Council hereby certify that John Stokes, about 29 years of age, late a Captain in the 2nd Virginia Regiment and whose pay was at the rate of 144 pounds per annum was disabled while in the service of the United States by several woundswhich occasioned the loss of his hand and greatly injured his left hand and that he is allowed the sum of 72 pounds yearly; which allowance is accordingly made him to commence on the first day of January 1787.
