LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA - MARRIAGES REGISTERS OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS BY REV. JOHN CAMERON Transcribed by Thomas Walter Duda Source: BELL, Landon C. _Cumberland Parish Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746-1816. Vestry Book 1746-1816_ Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore: 1974. pp. 299-320 No copyright notice was published in this source. Transcriber's Notes: Rev. John Cameron was an Episcopal minister. Mr. Bell gives no explanation for the quotation marks used throughout the marriage record. The dashes and blank columns appear in the original text. The 'L' column heading appears to be an abbreviation for Pounds. In order to preserve an 80-column format, a portion of the bride's name will sometimes be indented underneath the groom's name. In all cases, the continuation of each entry follows the bride's surname. Surnames within the marriage register appear in capital letters in this transcription. Capitalization of surnames has not been done for the birth and death records. Notes by the transcriber are enclosed in braces. ------------------------------------ [p. 299] CHAPTER XIV REVEREND JOHN CAMERON'S REGISTERS Register of Marriages Bristol Parish, 1784-1793, Nottoway Parish, 1794-1795, Cumberland Parish, 1796-1815. Register of Baptisms and Funerals Cumberland Parish, 1815. There were ordinarily kept by parish ministers: A record of births and baptisms in the parish, A record of marriages, and A record of deaths. In the case of the Reverend John Cameron, no register of births kept by him has been found, nor has any register of marriages for the period, about ten years, when he was rector of St. James' Parish, been discovered, and the only record or register of deaths kept by him, so far discovered, is a brief page or two, entitled: "A Register of baptisms & funerals for Cumberland Parish, By John Cameron, Rector," containing sixteen entries made in the year 1815. It seems reasonable to suppose that he had theretofore kept such a record, pobably in a book, whose space had been filled, and this was but the continuation, really, of a preceding register. This is, however, but a surmise, as no trace has been found of any such book or record, for prior years, kept by him. The Register of Marriages kept by Rev. John Cameron, here presented, begins in 1784 and ends in 1815. It is entitled "A Register of Marriages for Bristol Parish." The first entry in it is of the marriage, May 23, 1784, of Dudley Brown and Anne Todd, of Dinwiddie County. This Register of [p. 300] Marriages continues through the time of his rectorship in Bristol Parish, in Nottoway Parish and in Cumberland Parish. Reference to his change of office to Nottoway is made by his writing on the page preceding that which carries the title "A Register of Marriages for Bristol Parish," the following entry: "John Cameron Nottoway County January 28th, 1794" and "Cumberland Parish" is written boldly across the page at the point where his service begins in that parish. This Register evidently contains the complete record of marriages celebrated by him during the period of thirty-one years covered by it. The entries, while not very numerous, relatively, and in fact few indeed for some years, are consecutive, and the list has, in the original, all the appearance of completeness. The Doctor, to make this register, evidently found an old ledger, of suitable size, but partly used, with sufficient pages left untouched for his purpose. This is indicated by what was apparently the first writing done in the volume, and which indicates that is was begun as a ledger in 1757. This entry is: "Ledger 1757 Commenced, of Private Accots; Inputs; Taylor; &c & what money I owe to Sundrie People." Whose ledger it was originally does not appear. The Marriage Register contains the record of four hundred and fifty-nine marriages. And while, as we have seen, Dr. Cameron during the period covered by it had official connection with but three parishes, Bristol, Nottoway and Cumberland, yet, it should be observed, these marriages are by no means confined to these three parishes. In fact the register is quite as important to other localities as it is to these particular parishes. This fact clearly appears from an analysis of data contained in it. The marriages were celebrated in eleven counties -- all Southside Counties -- and in Petersburg. One hundred and fifty-six of them took place in Prince George County; seventy-three in Petersburg; fifty-seven in Lunenburg; fifty in Chesterfield; thirty-nine in Dinwiddie; thirty-eight in Sussex; twenty-five in Nottoway; while a very few occured in Surry, Brunswick, Prince Edward and Amelia. This distribution of the marriages is interesting and important [p. 301] and gives the Register a value, of a kind, and possibly a greater one than it would have, if confined to a more limited area. An added value is to be attached to the Register because the marriages appearing therein were not returned to court in lists such as were required by dissenting ministers, under the Act of October, 1780.[1] If that law contemplated that all persons performing marriage ceremonies should return such lists, Dr. Cameron did not so construe it. He resided in Lunenburg County and celebrated marriage ceremonies there from 1796 to 1815, but no list returned to court by him has been found, although there are many such lists returned during that period by ministers of the Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist Churches.[2] The gradual decline in the number of marriage ceremonies performed by Dr. Cameron, may indicate, not only the difficulty of his financial situation, but is suggestive also of the increasing strength of the "dissenting" denominations. From 1785 through 1788, the number of marriage ceremonies performed by him ranged from fifty to sixty per year; from 1789 to 1793 from twenty to forty; during the lean years in Nottoway, 1794 and 1795, he performed but twelve ceremonies, seven the first and five the second of those years; and the situation in this respect did not improve after his final removal to Cumberland Parish in 1796. From this time until his death there were only from one to ten couples per year who came his way for the marriage vows. In 1812 he performed a single ceremony, in 1813 none at all, and there were but two ceremonies in each of the years 1814 and 1815. The records show that more and more people were resorting to ministers of other churches, the leaders of the groups known as the "dissenters," in the days of the Established Church, to marry them. Thus in 1800, Reverend John Cameron married but two couples from Lunenburg County, while in that year, other ministers married in Lunenburg County, thirty-five couples, according to the [1] _Hening_, 361-2; _The Old Free State_, I, 387. [2] These are complied and printed in _The Old Free State_, II, 424-463. {Transcriber's note: see the digitally scanned transcription of these records, available in the Lunenburg County archives of VAGenWeb, scanned by Linda Russell Lewis.} [p. 302] returns now available made to court.[3] Some of the returns made by such ministers may not now be extant. During that year one Baptist minister married fourteen couples, another seven; while one Methodist preacher celebrated eleven marriages. The ratio did not improve, from the standpoint of the Episcopal Church, as the years went by, to the end of Dr. Cameron's earthly mission. The Registers; first, the Marriages, and next, the Baptisms and Funerals, follow: -------- [3] _The Old Free State_, II, 425-463. {Transcriber's note: the beginning page as cited here differs from Bell's own citation on the previous page. The reader is again referred to the online transcription mentioned above.} [p. 303] Ledger 1757 Commenced of Private Accots; Inputs; Taylors; &c & what money I owe to Sundrie People JOHN CAMERON NOTTOWAY COUNTY January 28th, 1794 [p. 304] A REGISTER OF MARRIAGES FOR BRISTOL PARISH 1784 County L S D ---- ------ - -- - May 23 Dudley BROWN and Anne TODD Dinwiddie " 12 " July 7 Duncan YOUNG and Susannah WOMACK Do.
