Bell Transcriber's Note: Although the title of the book gives a range of years from 1746-1825, at least one abstract, No. 106, is of a will dated 1826 and filed in 1827. Very often in the published text, a parenthetical comment has an opening parenthesis but not a closing one. Closing parentheses have been added in this transcription. The original transcription was divided into two files, the first file containing abstracts 1-245 and the second file containing the balance. Transcriber's Note: The index referred to in the title has not been transcribed. LUNENBURG COUNTY VIRGINIA WILLS 1746 - 1825 FOREWARD -------- Of all public papers not primarily made for such purposes, wills are probably more helpful in working out the facts respecting family pedigrees than any other single class of records. This does not result from any conscious desire of the testators to aid genealogists of subsequent centuries in their interesting researches. If there had been any such desire or any realization of the genealogical purposes for which such documents would be used, the wills would be of greater value than they are. In such cases, testators would not have been content to refer to "my wife", "my children", "my husband", "my son-in-law", etc., without naming them. But considering the fact that the wills were made, not to furnish genealogical information to descendants and relatives, but merely to dispose of the wordly possessions with which the testator was blessed, we are grateful indeed that so many testamentary papers prove of such great value. Many give information of three or more generations, and not only of descendants, but of collaterals, and hardly any are so briefly formulated and meagre in detail as not to afford some clue of value to an interested investigator. The wills presented herein embrace all of those recorded in Lunenburg County, Virginia, from its formation in 1746 up to and including 1825. Most of the wills are recorded in the Will Books, which evidently in the beginning were regarded as the separate records of the County Court. Some wills are recorded in a book known as the Circuit Court Will Book, while a few, in the earlier years, are found in Deed Books. Care has been taken to locate and abstract every will probated in the County during the period mentioned, wherever recorded, and it is believed the list presented is complee. The abstracts of wills embraced in this volume were carefully made for the writer by the capable Deputy Clerk of Lunenburg County, Virginia, R. G. Dimmette. As any student of such records knows, it is inevitable that there will be doubt as to the correct rendering of some of the names encountered. In cases of doubt, note was made of the fact, and the record considered by the Clerk, John L. Yates, who has had unusual opportunity to become familiar with the records, as he has been Clerk of the Court, and custodian of these records for over half a century. All such cases have been carefully scrutinized by the writer, who has jointly examined the original records with either one or both of these gentlemen. It is hoped, therefore, that errors involved in deciphering these records have been reduced to the minimum. Landon Covington Bell Note ---- Landon Covington Bell died on August 8, 1960. Transcriber's Note: The text at this point begins a new page which is unnumbered, as are all subsequent pages. Because each abstract is numbered, no attempt has been made in this transcription to show page breaks. 1. Abernathy, William T. (or F.) 7-30-1825; 8-8-1826 W.B. 8/486 Mentions: Sisters: Martha E. Chapman Neal Blackwell moved to Henderson, Ky. (Todd Co.) in 1832, died there. Three sons moved there with him: Paul, Branch, James. Transcriber's Note: Bell is correct regarding the marriage of Nancy Jeffress Blackwell to William Arvin. However, Chapman Neal Blackwell remained in Lunenburg County through 1840, as evidenced by his enumeration in the census of that year. During the 1840's, he removed to Henderson County, Ky. rather than Todd Co, and was enumerated in Henderson Co. in the 1850 census. His daughter Nancy and his son-in-law, William Arvin, lived for a few years in Henderson Co., Ky., returning to Lunenburg by September, 1851, suggesting that Chapman Neal Blackwell had died in Henderon Co. Ky. prior to then. Chapman's wife, Prudence Russell Jeffress, remained in Henderson County, being enumerated there in 1860 as a member of the family of her son Paul. 40.
