David S. Garland, whose house is still standing. Dr. Brown was a physician at the University of Edinburgh, where his younger brother, Dr. Thomas Brown held the chair of Moral Philosophy; he was the successor of Dugald Stewart, and the predecessor of the great Wilson. This family of Browns of the Castle of Carlswith, descend from the Murdochs of Cumlodon, and date from the time of the Bruces; they came from Normandy with William the Conquerer, 1806. Dr. James Brown was the father of Dr. John Brown, also educated in Edinburgh; later moved to Charlotte Court House. Thomas R. Brown was a lawyer, the second son of Dr. James Brown. He married a Miss Coleman of Orange or Caroline County. Dr. James Brown was the physician of William Cabell of Union Hill, and many others of the prominent families of that section. New Glasgow was the county seat, and was at that time the “center of culture and learning”. The writer had the pleasure of taking these notes from the family memoirs of the Robertson family of Amherst Court House, who also have a very beautiful framed photograph of Dr. Thomas Brown above mentioned, and of Sarah Brown (Robertson) daughter of the above Dr. James Brown, from whom they descend.
