Christian Cemetery Location: At 4th Street, between 10th and 11th Streets, now called Court Street. Lynchburg, Virginia DATE: About 1765. OWNERS: “Old English Church”. DESCRIPTION: This was the first graveyard in Lynchburg, Virginia; it was back of and surrounding the old “English Church”. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Within later years many of the remains were removed from this graveyard to the Methodist Cemetery and other places. In W. Asbury Christian’s book he says he can recall seeing the bones of human beings being thrown out when foundations were being dug for dwelling sites. Dr. Henry Latham told Asbury Christian that from the size of the skull and the length of the bones of the leg that the man was seven feet tall. Those bones were put back in their first resting place and will remain there until the last day.
