A heavy cross, mounted on a base, has this:

Brigadier General Samuel Garland, Jr.
Fell at Boonsboro, Md.
September 14, 1862
In the 31st year of his age
The only son of his mother and she was a widow.

Samuel Garland, Sr.
born in Albemarle County, May 5, 1789
died in Coahoma County, Miss., Nov. 10, 1861


Lucinda Rose, widow of Spottswood Garland, was a daughter of Robert Rose and 
granddaughter of Hugh Rose of “Geddos” in Amherst County, and they were the 
parents of Caroline M. Garland, the mother of Gen. Samuel Garland.
