Saunders: 1937 Nov. 26 Research made by Susan R. Beardsworth Cemetery Location: Presbyterian Cemetery, 2400 block of Grace Street, between Ann and Globe Streets Lynchburg, Virginia DATE: 1851. OWNERS: Descendants of his family. DESCRIPTION: A handsome fifteen foot shaft between beautiful magnolia trees; across the top of the shaft is “Saunders”, beneath this a star; underneath a young oak tree out off near the top. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: On the base of the shaft is the following inscription: This columne marks the burial place of James D. Saunders who departed this life in Lynchburg June 5th, 1851, in the 27th year of his age. Brave, noble, ardent and distinguished, it required not length of years to endear him to a large circle of friends, who have claimed of his family the privilege of placing this marble over his remains as a monument to his virtues and a memorial of their love. Near this grave are buried members of young Saunders’ family; the following inscriptions are taken from the markers at the graves of his sister and a brother-in-law. On a heavily carved oval stone with side and foot pieces in cradle fashion, overgrown with clematis, violets and lillies, is this inscription: Nannie wife of Richard Pollard Born Feb. 26, 1829 Died August 1, 1861 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God Near the side of her grave is a tiny stone, simply marked: “Our child in Heaven”. Nearby, a three foot stone with flowers carved across the top, beneath which is “James Chalmers”; below this a cross and crown, and the following inscription: Company B, 2nd Va. Cavalry, C.S.A. Born in Halifax Co., Va. Sept. 21, 1829 Killed in discharge of his duty as a soldier at Annondale, Fairfax Co., Va. October 21st, 1861. A woman in purity and gentleness; a child in innocence, he was yet the brave man fearing nothing but his God. He fell a Christian soldier with his hand on hilt and eye on Heaven; fighting at once under the banner of his country and the cross of his Savior.
