Tunison Cemetery Location: Criglersville P.O. Virginia, Route #231, north 1 mile; thence west over bridge to Route #649, 500 yards northwest up a hill to the site. Madison County, Virginia DATE: Prior to 1857. OWNERS: The land on which this cemetery is located is now owned by Mr. Mac Utz (1937), and has been in the Utz family for the past eighty years. Prior to this it was owned by Bonds’. DESCRIPTION: There are two very large graveyards, one is about fort feet square, in which Bonds’ ancestors are supposed to be buried. Visible today (1937) are about twenty-one graves, marked with gray native rocks, no inscriptions. It is now grown up with bushes and trees, some of which are eight inches in diameter. Whether it was enclosed is not known. The other graveyard is larger and said to be that of Mr. Bonds’ slaves. It is on the side of the hill to the north of the other one. It is being cultivated around, and each year a little more of the site is cultivated. At one time about thirty-five graves were visible. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This graveyard is so very ancient that no one now living knows the names of those buried here. It is supposed to be the ancestors of the Bonds’ and it is said that some Berry’s are buried in this plot also.
