MADISON COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Governor Kemper Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Governor Kemper graveyard: 1936 Nov. 13 Research made by Evelyn Tunison Cemetery Location: 1 mile south of Leon Postoffice, Virginia, south of Route #29. First gate on south side after leaving Leon. Madison County, Virginia DATE: 1853. OWNERS: (blank) DESCRIPTION: The one large monument or marker is about six feet high, two feet square at the top and three feet at the base. The cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall about four feet high, part of which is still standing. In the graveyard are some beautiful boxwoods, very large. There are a number of graves off in one corner just outside of the main graveyard with plain stone markers that have no inscriptions on them. This is said to be the slaves graves. There are about nine of them. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following is taken from the monument: William Kemper Born Nov. 6, 1776 Died Oct. 29, 1853 and Maria E. His wife (nee Allison) Born Nov. 5, 1787 Died Nov. 26, 1873 ------------- Their Children Mary A. Freeman Fred K.T. Kemper Wm. H. Kemper Susan E. Matthews John S. Kemper James L. Kemper Maria R. Botts Sarah M. Bocock Aside from the above inscriptions found on the main monument in the center of the cemetery we find the following at the head of William Kemper’s grave: Sacred to the memory of William Kemper Who was born in Fauquier Nov. 6, 1770 And died in Madison Co., Oct. 29, 1853 His spirit awaits its reunion with the dust. He left four daughters and three sons and one wife. She who loved him living and reveres him to erect this stone.
