Tunison Cemetery Location: From Pratts P.O. Virginia on Route #231, go one-fourth mile south; thence one-fourth mile west to site. Graveyard on the south side of the road. Madison County, Virginia DATE: 1802, date of oldest marker. OWNERS: Beal’s. DESCRIPTION: The old Beal graveyard is located about one hundred yards southwest of the house in an open field. The only slab visible is a sandstone one that marks the grave of Ruebin Beal. This stone has been broken in half and the only inscription readable on it is “Ruebin Beal, died 1802”. The other letters are worn so it is impossible to make them out. About 300 yards farther west is located a large slave graveyard with at least 40 graves. There are no markers, only common rocks at the head and foot. Most of these have sunken in. There is no fence around this and it is grown up in bushes. These are graves of the slaves that Ruebin Beal and Robert C. Carter owned. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: None.
