[sic] He was then 75 years of age. He enlisted in 1779 under Captain William Kirtly. His own statement is as follows: "In the early part of the year 1779 I came from the County of King George to the County of Culpeper (that part which is now Madison) to visit a brother. I fell in with William Kirtly then a captain in the regiment at the Albamarle Barracks commanded by Colonel Frank Taylor. I remained at the Barracks with Captain Kirtly and Captain Porter.
