The name "Standley" is spelled with a "d" throughout; in one instance where the clerk mistakenly wrote "Stanley," he carefully inserted a "d" above it. Although the adminstrator's bond makes passing reference to a will, the will of Thomas Standley was apparently not recorded. The administrators of the estate were Thomas Standley's widow Susannah (Smith) Standley, and George Thornton, who was probably Thomas Standley's brother-in-law. George Thornton, a resident of Orange/Greene Co. VA, was married to Margaret Stanley/Standley (at least according to "Genealogies of Virginia Families from the W&m Col. Qtrly. Hist. Mag.," Vol. V (Gen. Pub. Co., 1982), p.45.) Susannah Smith married Thomas Standley on Sept. 15, 1781, in Culpeper Co., Virginia. The marriage was performed by Rev. George Eve, Baptist. (Culpeper Co. Ministers' Returns, from Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, "Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800," Vol. II, Part III, p.232.) ============================================================== Madison Co., VA Will Book 1, pp.213-214 Feb. 28, 1799 ADMINISTRATOR'S BOND FOR THE ESTATE OF THOMAS STANDLEY Know all men by these presents that we SUSANNAH STANDLEY and GEORGE THORNTON are held and firmly bound to HENRY HILL ADAM BANKS ROBERT THOMAS; gentlemen Justices of the Court of Madison County now sitting in the sum of three thousand Dollars to the payment Whereof well and truely to be made to the Said Justices and their Successors; we bind ourselves and each of us our & each of our heirs executors & Administrators Jointly and Severally firmly by these presents; Sealed with our seals and dated this 27th Day of Febry One Thousand Seven Hundred and ninety nine and in the 23d year of the Commonwealth.
