Barnes Cemetery Location: 5 miles south of South Hill, Virginia on Route #630. Cemetery is in corner between Route #630 and Route #1. Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1812 – date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Fred Watkins, to present date (1937) (Baskerville family reserve cemetery rights.) DESCRIPTION: This is the oldest cemetery in this locality. It is enclosed by a high thick brick wall, broke in some places, but most of the wall is still standing. Baskervilles, Alexanders and Colemans are buried here. Some of the inscriptions on some of the stones and slabs are so worn that the inscription cannot be read. The tree boxwood of immense size are very pretty. The ground is covered with periwinkle. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following vault stands about three feet high, built with a double thickness of brick covered by a granite slab bearing this inscription: This monument which covers the remains of William Baskerville late of Lombardy Grove and is erected by his three sons, Charles, George and William as a feeble testimony of their affection for him when living and veneration for his memory. Born May 12, 1756 Died November 6, 1812 aged 56 years William Baskerville Born February 8, 1859 Died November 8, 1859 The following are vaults with sides and ends of marble, covered with the granite slabs and stands about one and one half feet above ground. Charles Baskerville Who died March 22, 1855 in the 46 year of his age is a husband and a parent Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Ann wife of Charles Baskerville and daughter of Col. H.E. Coleman of Halifax, Va. Who died August 19, 1821 in the 25th year of her age In memory of Patrick Hamilton Born at Burnside Scotland on 31st May 1790 Died at Burnside No. Carolina 28th June 1851 Jane Carolina Wife of Charles Hamilton of Granville County North Carolina and daughter of Col. Henry E. Coleman of Halifax, Va.
