Barnes Cemetery Location: On Route #1 about 2 miles south of Steel Bridge. Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: Unknown OWNERS: Dr. David Jiggits and Mrs. Susan Jiggits. Dr. Tom Palmer, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: The old house has burned down and there only remains some brick and a sunken place where the basement was. This was a house of the early eighteen hundreds. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In the old Jiggit cemetery stands a marble vault about thirty inches high. The two sides and ends are of beautiful white marble with a granite slab for the top bearing the following inscription: Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Susanna R. Baskerville Wife of William Baskerville of Buna Vista And daughter of Dr. David and Mrs. Susan Jiggits of Fall Grove Born January 26, 1823 and died February 17, 1857 Leaving eight children This cemetery has a nice iron fence around it and some ten or twelve large boxwood. Many of the graves have no markers. One grave just beside the vault described has a granite slab over its entire length but bears no inscription or else age has worn it entirely away.
