Barnes Cemetery Location: 8.3 miles west of Clarksville, Virginia; go 6 miles west of Clarksville, Va., on Route #58; thence 2 miles south on Route #735; thence .3 mile west on Route #602. Cemetery on south side of the road 100 yards. Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1824, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Descendants of the Overbey Family, to present date. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery has a wide drive from the highway to the entrance gate, bordered by maples and other trees. The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall five feet high, one and one half feet thick, built of gray granite rock. The enclosure is about twenty-five by fifty feet, in size, with a large iron gate at the entrance. This small cemetery is well kept and the inscriptions are legible. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Old Uncle Billy Overbey, the slave carriage driver, was buried close up in the southwest corner of this cemetery, so greatly did the family love the faithful old servant. Uncle Billy’s grand-children and great-grand-children still live on this old farm. A pillow like marble headstone, marked: Sarah Eugenia Overbey wife of James T. Pace Sept. 7, 1835 Dec. 20, 1917 God has the spirit Friends have the memory Earth the ashes. Sacred to the memory of Ann Overbey Born October 28, 1775 Died June 17, 1859 Peter Z.
