Barnes Cemetery Location: City of Boydton Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1824. OWNERS: Church. DESCRIPTION: The original building stands as built, in splendid preservation and in regular use for worship. The cemetery is well kept and family sections are marked by cemetery fencing that has stood so long that the graves can no longer be told one from the other and the gate inscription is practically gone. The graves in these sections were not marked by stones. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following are some inscriptions from tombstones that mark the graves of some of Mecklenburg’s most prominent sons and daughters, of that day, buried in this cemetery. Dr. Alexander T. Laird born April 23, 1820 died Feb. 2, 1881 A servant of the Lord from early youth Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth D. Goode who died on the 14th day of Jan. 1850 in the 71st year of her age Lucy G. Chambers departed this life on the 20th of May 1851 in the 29th year of her age Sterling Chambers born Oct. 8, 1839 died July 28, 1848 E.T. Baptist born May 1792 died August 1857 (This grave is built up about two feet above the ground and covered entirely by a marble slab, bearing the above dates.) Mary others here, too worn to be read.
