Barnes Cemetery Location: Go 4 miles northwest of Boydton, Virginia on Route #46; thence 2 miles west on Route #677. Cemetery on north side of the road. Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1844 – date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: Goode descendants, to present date. (1937) DESCRIPTION: The gate to the cemetery is entered through the garden. A beautiful rock wall surrounds the entire cemetery and the wall is about four feet high and fifteen to eighteen inches thick, in perfect condition. The rocks are of the granite type. Periwinkle covers the entire ground as a deep carpet and a very large cedar is covered with beautiful ivy. The graves are built up about one foot, with brick walls and covered with granite slab bearing the inscriptions. There are two small children’s graves that the inscription has worn off from the weather. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Here is buried William O. Goode, Sr., builder of Wheatland and a prominent Congressman from this district for three terms and elected for the fourth term just before he died. He was a man that owned much land and many slaves and goodly wealth. Also his wife Sarah Massie is buried here. And his son William O. Goode, Jr., who was killed during the War Between the States. Sacred to the memory of William O. Goode Who was born Sept. 16, 1798 Died July 3, 1859 W.O. Goode Son of W.O. and Sarah Goode Born Sept. 15, 1830 Died May 8, 1863 Sacred to the memory of Sarah wife of William O. Goode who departed this life 14 April 1844 in the 33rd year of her age.
