Barnes Cemetery Location: 3 miles northwest of South Hill, Virginia, on Route #47, thence 1 mile northeast on Route #654, thence 2 miles north on Route #636. Cemetery on west side of the road. Mecklenburg County, Virginia DATE: 1857 – date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: Fortescue Whittle and descendants 1857 to present date. (1937) DESCRIPTION: A section about fifteen feet square enclosed by a wire fence, overgrown by periwinkle and honey suckle with mimosa and locust. No care is taken of the cemetery. Only two of the several graves have markers with inscriptions. They being low granite stones. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Here we find the remains of one of the once largest land owners in Virginia, and father of a large family, very prominent, as also his wife Mary Ann Davis Whittle and possibly her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, and one son, Powhatan Whittle, a prominent one arm lawyer of Atlanta, George.
