She was 74 years of age and therefore born in 1763. The year and place of John Nelson's birth are not shown but he "was the son of Secretary Nelson of York." In June, 1776, he was appointed captain of a company and he served in Colonel Eland's 1st Cavalry regiment. He was taken ill while on an expedition from Morristown, New Jersey, into Pennsylvania and resigned his commission on account of his health. In 1779 he raised a company of volunteer horsemen and soon afterwards he was appointed major of the Virginia State Cavalry. He served in the South under Baron DeKalb and General Gates. He returned to Virginia and served under Generals Muhlenberg and Lafayette. He was in the seige of Yorktown and continued in the service until February 14 1782. He married July 25, 1781, Nancy or Ann Carter of Williamsburg. They were married in the chapel of the College of William and Mary. He died February 18, 1827. His will was dated June 6, 1826, and he appointed as his executors his sons, John Nelson of Mecklenburg County, Virginia; Thomas Nelson and Robert Nelson. The children of John Nelson and Nancy Carter Nelson were: Thomas Maudit, born 1782; John, born 1784; Lucy, born 1785; Robert, born 1787; Hugh born 1788 died 1730; Nancy Carter, born 1790, married E. Kennon, died 1831; William, born 1792; Mary, born 1794, died 1795; Nathaniel, born 1798; and Sarah, born 1802. William Nelson, the fifth son, had a daughter Anna Matilda, who was born in 1817. It is shown in the application that "Secretary Nelson of York" had another son, Thomas, who married Sally Carey, eldest daughter of Wilson Miles Carey.
