CATES NOTES - Mecklenburg Co., Virginia Notes of the late Bernard C Rodenhizer, Jr., contributed by his son, Bernard C Rodenhizer III - Nov. 1997 Wm. J. Cates was living in Mecklenburg County by 1855. He posted bond after being elected a constable for the town of Clarksville, 17 October 1855. (Mecklenburg County, VA, Deed Book 34, p. 569) He also bought some land. DEEDS Susan M. Langhorne of Richmond, VA, widow of Alexander Langhorne, deceased, conveyed to W. J. Cates - cons. $75.00 - 6 acres more or less on the road leading from the Town of Clarksville to Sandy Fork and adjoining the lands of Robert Andrews and George W. Cates - cons. $102.00 - 20 « acres where Lanieve, Senr., now lives and household and kitchen furniture. This land adjoined that of Joseph G. Sneed, William Jeter, etal. (John Lanieve, Senr., was in debt to Joseph Lanieve, Junr., for $102.00) His /s/ John X Lanieve, Sr. Mark Dated 27 October 1856 Recorded 27 October 1856 (Mecklenburg County, VA, Deed Book 35, p. 174) W. J. Cates had to give on or more deeds of trust for debts so he sold part of his property. Know all men by these present that I Wm. J. Cates have this day bargained, sold and conveyed to Joseph G. Sneed one lot of land near Clarksville containing 11 acres bounded by Skipwith Ferry Road for $125.00 /s/ Wm. J. Cates Dated 29 November 1859 Recorded 6 March 1863 (Mecklenburg County, VA, Deed Book 36, p. 568) Wm. F. Small conveyed to Wm. J. Cates - cons. $300.00 cash - lots Nos. 162, 163 in the old survey and 5 2/3 acres in the new survey located on Blue Creek, adjoining the lands of John F. Daniel on the south and Springfield on the east (Springfield at that time was township on the east side of the Roanoke River and the aforesaid referred to the line between Clarksville and Springfield) lying and being in the town of Clarksville, together with all tenements, etc. /s/ Wm. Virginia Mary B. - female, white, age 15, at home, b. Virginia Greene Clarice - female, white, age 21, at home, b. Virginia DEEDS Note: This property was purchased by Wm. F. Small by deed from W. Small by deed from W. H. Pully, January 1863; it having been conveyed to Sarah Pully by C. W. Liewellen, 18 January 1859. Last Cates deed recorded in the Mecklenburg County records was that of Wm. J. Cates selling the following land. Wm. J. Cates and wife, Elizabeth H. Cates, conveyed to Erasmus Baptist (Cold) - cons. $200.00 - lots Nos. 162 and 163 in the old survey and 5 2/3 acres in the new survey situated on Blue Creek and being in the town of Clarksville together with all tenements, premises, etc. This land was conveyed by Wm. F. Small to Wm. J. Cates, 17 March 1866. /s/ Wm. J. Cates /s/ Elizabeth H. Cates Elizabeth, wife of Wm. J. Cates, being privily examined, appeared in court and released her dower right in said land, 18 November 1867.
