HAMNER NOTES - Mecklenburg Co., Virginia Notes of the late Bernard C Rodenhizer, Jr., contributed by his son, Bernard C Rodenhizer III - Nov. 1997 SOME DESCENDANTS OF JAMES1 HAMNER OF LUNENBURG AND MECKLENBURG COUNTIES, VIRGINIA INTRODUCTION There are three bound volumes of notes on the Hamner Family in Virginia from information compiled by Jerome H. Hamner, Miss Ruth Hamner, William Murry Hamner and other. This report contains information from Wood's HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, family records and traditions, plus court records. Among the early Hamners mentioned were: Humphrey Hamner in York County in 1640; Nicholas Hamner in James City and York Counties in the 1600 and early 1700's. A Nicholas Hamner moved to Albemarle County, Virginia, about 1745m where he died testate 1793-1794. Five sons were named: Henry Hamner, Robert Hamner, William Hamner, Nicholas Hamner, and John Hamner. There were also four daughters. It is thought that the James Hamner who bought land in Lunenburg County, later Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1754, was a sixth son. However, this has never been proven. JAMES1 HAMNER James Hamner first appears in the records in Lunenburg County when he bought land there in 1754. He next appears on the Tithe Lists of Lunenburg County, St. James Parish, in 1764. Richard Witton's list James Hamner - 3 tithes (SUNLIGHT ON THE SOUTHSIDE, TITHES OF LUNENBURG COUNTY, VA, 1748-1783 - Landon C. Bell, p. 265) St. James Parish was cut from Lunenburg to form Mecklenburg County later in 1764. DEED Dennis Larke conveyed to James Hamner, planter - cons. 80 pounds, 10 shillings - 284 acres on Miles Creek, adjoining Johnson and Lucas. This included all houses, orchards, waterways , which meant it was a plantation. Wit: /s/ Dennis Larke Geo. Baskerville John Ballard Wm Marston Lightfoot Dated 2 July 1754 Recorded 2 July 1754 (Lunenburg County, VA, Deed Book 3, p. 542) James Hamner, William Holmes, and James Lett were processioners of land in 1759 in Precinct 1, which land were bounded by Mize's Ford Road, (Cumberland Parish Register, Lunenburg County, VA) OTHER DEEDS James Hamner conveyed to Robert Cunningham both Lunenburg County - cons. 22 pounds, 4 shillings - 40 acres on the ridge between Miles and Dockery Creeks. This was part of 284 acres he purchased in 1754. /s/ James Hamner Dated Recorded 14 Feb. 1765 (Lunenburg County, VA, Deed Book 10, p. 56) George Jefferson conveyed to James Hamner, both of Mecklenburg County - cons. 32 pounds, 10 shilling - 130 acres on the branches of Miles Creek. /s/ Geo. Jefferson No Witnesses listed as deed was record in court same day. Dated 11 April 1767 ` Recorded 11 April 1768 (Mecklenburg County, VA, Deed Book 2, p. 19) James Hamner, Mecklenburg County, planter, conveyed to Robert Lark, same County - cons. 150 pounds current money of Virginia - 244 acres on Cunningham's . With houses, gardens, orchards, fences, etc. Wit: /s/ James Hamner Henry Delony Robt Cunningham Isaac (X) Holmes Sarah, the wife of James Hamner, relinquished her dower right in said land. Dated 18 February 1768 Recorded 14 March 1768 In other conveyances, Isaac Crowder conveyed to James Hamner, for 40 pounds, 100 acres by estimation on the branches of Miles and Cock's (Cox) Creeks, recorded 11 April 1768, (Mecklenburg County, VA, Deed Book 3, p. 21) James and Sarah Hamner conveyed to John Dayly (Daly) - cons. 90 pounds - 230 acres on the branches of Miles and Coxes Creeks with all houses, gardens, etc., recorded 13 April 1772. (Mecklenburg County, VA Deed Book 3, p. 348) Thomas Williams of Henrico County conveyed to James Hamner of Mecklenburg County - con. 180 pounds - 500 acres more or less, on both sides and in the fork of Allens Creek. This adjourned the lines of Thomas Roberts, John Farrar, Stephen Mallett, Senr., Henry Jackson, Stephen Mallett, Junr., and Thomas Norrell (Nowell) containing all houses, orchards, etc. (This is a plantation and in a different location in the county from where he bought his first land.) He was appointed surveyor of a road in room of John Farrar, discharged, 13 November 1774 (Mecklenburg County, VA, Order Book 4, p. 327) Henry Hamner - soldier and pensioner. #W-10081. He died in Johnson County, Indiana. CENSUS 1782 - MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VA James Hamner - 8 white souls - 3 slaves Henry Hamner - 4 white souls - 0 slaves WILL OF JAMES HAMNER Stated that he was "afflicted with sickness but of sound and disposing min and memory". Item: Bequest to wife, Sarah Hamner, of whole estate upon payment of his just debts, during her life and after her death the following bequests: Item: Bequests to sons-in-law, John Calthorp, and Isaac Pully and to their heirs, five pounds sterling to each of them. Item: Bequest to daughter, Elizabeth Toone and her heirs, forty five pounds current money. Item: Bequest to son, John Hamner and his heirs, forty five pounds Item: Bequest to son, George Hamner and his heirs, forty five pounds Item: Bequest to daughter, Rebecca Burton and her heirs, forty five pounds. If there be any more of personal estate remaining after above bequests, this was to be divided among his five children, to wit: Henry Hamner, John Hamner, George Hamner, Elizabeth Toone, and Rebecca Burton, except it be his hand. The money accruing from sale of his land was to be divided among his three sons, to wit: Henry Hamner, John Hamner, and George Baskerville Hamner. Dated 14 December 1792 Proved 10 January 1793 (Mecklenburg County, VA, Will Book 3, p. 114) CHILDREN OF JAMES1 AND SARAH HAMNER (These may not be in order of birth.) 1. -------_________2 Hamner married John Calthorp. No marriages record has been found. She may have been deceased by 14 December 1792, when her father made his will. There is a record in the marriage book of Mecklenburg County, Va., John Calltharp - Mary Crowder - M.B. 10 February 1784. 2. Sarah2 Hamner married Isaac Pully. No marriage has been found, but her name was found in a deed dated 1800, in which she released her dower in land. 3. Elizabeth2 Hamner married William Toone, 22 March 1786. Surety: Isaac Pully 4. Rebecca2 Hamner married Allen Burton, 22 March 1786. Surety: Isaac Pully. (Allen Burton was the son of Robert Burton of Mecklenburg County.) 5. Henry2 Hamner eldest son of James and Sarah Hamner, was born in Lunenburg County, VA, in 1759. He married Sarah Decker, 26 December 1781, in Mecklenburg County. Sarah was born 6 July 1760 in Virginia. About 1800, the family moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, where Henry Hamner died 2 January 1844. He applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Mercer County, 3 November 1835. He stated his age as 76 years. The following names and dates were in the family Bible and were sent in with the pension application. John2 Hamner was born 2 January 1761 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and died 28 October 1836 in Johnson County, Indiana. He married Mary (Molly) Whoberry (Hoobry), 22 December 1790, in Mecklenburg County. She was born 4 August 1770 in Mecklenburg County, and died 14 November 1842 in Johnson County, Indiana. He applied for a pension there, 10 November 1834. Stated his age as 73 years. He said that he was born in Mecklenburg County, Va., where he lived until 1801when he moved to Mercer County, Kentucky. He lived there until 1823 when he became a resident of Johnson County, Indiana. In 1779, he volunteered as a guard at a Military Magazine. He enlisted in Mecklenburg County under Captain Stephen Mabry in Col. Lewis Burwell's Regiment. His application, No. 22619, was approved 23 May 1835. After his death, Sarah Hamner, his widow, made an application in Boyle County, Kentucky, 7 November 1843. She was then 83 years old. Pen. W-10081. (Information from pension application.) The following children were listed in the probate proceedings after the death of their mother, Mary Hamner. Mary Hamner, a widow, died 19 November 1842, leaving the following children, her only heirs at law: James Hamner; Ann Hamner, wife of Liberty Noel; Rebecca Hamner, wife of Jacob Coffelt; Sarah Doan, widow; Elizabeth Hamner, wife of Thomas Coffelt; Polly Hamner, wife of John A. George2 Baskerville Hamner was born in Mecklenburg County ca 1771. He married Anne Edmundson in Mecklenburg County, 19 December 1793. Item: Bequest to wife, residue of estate to be used for life. After her death, estate "which may then in being for support" to be equally divided amongst his children and grandchildren except Howell Jeffries, son of my daughter, Sarah Jeffries, (as his uncle Howell L. Jeffries has provided for him) and my daughter Maria "having given her as much as I intend to out of my estate". Item: Samuel Jeffries,4 son of my daughter Sarah, is to have no part of my estate. (M.B. 29 October 1826) Minister: John B. Smith. Consent: Geo. B. Hamner, father of Ann George B.3 Hamner, Jr., married Eliza Redd, 5 September 1828. Surety: Samuel Young. (M.B. 1 September 1828) Minister: Allen D. Metcalf No marriage records have been found for Maria3 Hamner, William A.3 Hamner, and Samuel E.3 Hamner. Samuel E. Hamner died in Brunswick County, Va., before 21 March 1822. (Mecklenburg County, Va., Deed Book 20, p. 15) Sarah Hamner married Isaac Pully.
