Another William Pully (Sr.) died in Surry County; will dated 29 January 1777, proved 25 March 1777; naming sons Lewis and William Pully, Jr., and daughters, Mary Fugler and Elinor Mc Daniel. (Surry County, VA, Wills, Deeds, Etc., 1768 - 1779, p. 460) Comment: It seems logical to assume that the early Pullys who came to Lunenburg, later Mecklenburg County, were descended from the Pullys of Surry County. For example, Spettle Pully may have been a son of William Pully who was an heir of James Spittell and was called brother by him. There was a William Pully, Jr., named in William Pully's will dated 1777. He would be the right age for the William Pully of Mecklenburg and Lunenburg. There was also a William Pully in Brunswick County who served in the Revolutionary War. More research needs to be done on these early Pullys. LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA The first Pully to appear in the records of Lunenburg County was a Spettle (Spittle) Pully in 1751. Lunenburg County tithe list - 1751 Field Jefferson, Enumerator. (Mecklenburg County, VA, Order Book 4, p. 446) CENSUS MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VA. 1782 Pully, Spittle - 11 white souls - 3 blacks Pully, Isaac - 5 white souls - 1 black As noted above, Spettle Pully sold his land in Mecklenburg County in 1790 and left this county. It is not known whether he went south or west. Its is not known whether or not Spettle and Sarah Pully had any children. However, it seems likely, as he had eleven in his family in the census of 1782. Isaac Pully may have been a son, as he is of the right age and Spettle Pully was the only Pully here early. Rebecca J. Pully may have been a daughter. She married John Goode, M. B. 18 July 1796, in Mecklenburg County. The Goodes owned land next to that of Spettle Pully. William Pully may have been a son. He was a Revolutionary War pensioner, born 1757 - 1758. WILLIAM PULLY OF LUNENBURG AND MECKLENBURG COUNTIES, VIRGINIA William Pully was in Lunenburg County in 1782. He was in Mecklenburg part of the time and Lunenburg County part, as is shown on the tax lists (included). About 1814, he came back to Mecklenburg where he lived until his death. Pully married Margaret Lawrence, M. B. 26 November 1784, in Mecklenburg County. Surety: Hubbard Ferrell. There are several deeds in Lunenburg County. William Pully was a Revolutionary War pensioner. He applied for a pension in Mecklenburg County, 16 March 1819, He gave his age as 62 years and that he enlisted in Mecklenburg County, VA, in the company of Capt. Samuel Hopkins of the 6th Virginia Regiment. He told of service in both northen and southern battles. He must have been the William Pully who was listed in the census of Lunenburg County in 1762 - 1 tithe - 6 white souls - no blacks. His pension is file #38, 318. He is supposed to have had two children - a son James Pully who was killed in the War of 1812 and a daughter Frances Pully who married Thomas Mitchell, M.B. 31 October 1810, and went to Kentucky. ISAAC PULLY OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA Isaac Pully was born ca 1756, married ca 1777 (there is no marriage record extant) as he had five in his family in the census of 1782.
