This card file, which was compiled primarily in 1924 prior to the release of the official records, is a source of information on individuals who served in the Confederate Navy and was used to establish proof of military service particularly for veterans applying for state pensions. It was compiled by Captain W. MacElroy, Navy Department, United Confederate Veterans. While this is not a comprehensive source, there is considerable information about the service of the sailors that are listed in the file. The source of the information is noted and ranges from printed and documentary material to the testimony of other veterans.
