The series of movements for these days included fighting at Raccoon Ford, Bartletts' Mills, Robertson's Tavern and New Hope, and the Mine Run battle is also spoken of as the battle of Locust Grove, of Paynes Tavern and of Orange Grove. The troops engaged on the Confederate side were Early's, Rhodes' and E. Johnson's Divisions, of Ewell's Corps, supported by Stuart's cavalry. They confronted the 1st, 2nd, 3d, 5th, and 6th corps, and 1st and 2nd Cavalry Divisions, of the army of the Potomac, under the direct command of General Meade. The series of engagements was marked by more than the usual success for the Confederate arms against numerical odds, and resulted in the withdrawal of Meade across the Rapidan. A correspondent of the Richmond Dispatch writing from the seat of war rated the Confederate loss as fully 500 "killed and wounded." Among the casualties were Generals "Jeb" Stuart and J. M. Jones, slightly wounded, and Lieutenant Colonel Walton, 23rd VA infantry, killed. Rosser's cavalry struck the Federal rear and captured a trail of seventy wagons, destroying fifty of them and captured 150 prisoners and as many mules and horses. The Federal loss in killed, wounded, and missing and captured during the Mine Run movement was nearly 1,000 men. Roll of Honor of the Soldiers of Orange County [In the following rosters, where no date of enlistment is given, it was during the first year of the war; where no date of death or discharge, the service was till the close of the war; where no rank is given, the enlistment was as private.
