Grissom/Goodrich/Rutledge Deed of Trust, 1819 - Montgomery Co. VA (Deed Book H 1821-1824 Page 108 Reel 5 LVA) This Indenture made and entered into this 20th day of September one thousand eight hundred and nineteen between Charles Grissom of the County of Montgomery of the first part and John B. Goodrich and William E. Rutledge of the other part witnesseth that the said Charles Grissom in order to secure the larger grant of a bond executed to John Barreger bearing date the 20th day of this heresaid month of September 1819 for the amount of Five hundred and forty five Dollars and in consideration of One Dollar to the said Charles Grissom in hand paid by the said John B.Goodrich and Wm. E. Rutledge at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged-He, the said Charles Grissom, hath granted, bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant, bargain and sell unto the said John B. Goodrich and Wm. E. Rutledge, his part of his land late the property of Robert Grissom, dec'd also one other share of the said land which by fell to and belonged of right to Ann Price daughter of Robert which was purchased by the said Charles which made two shares in the said land late the property of the said Robert Grissom and also six head of horses, five head of horned cattle, twenty head of sheep, twenty head of hogs, two feather beds and furniture with the belonging thereto, one cupboard, with the furniture therein contained, also one box of dry goods now lying at Newbern in this county and the right, title, interest, property, claim and demand both at law and equity of him the said Charles Grissom and to the said land and other property herein before mentioned. To have and to hold the property aforesaid to be hereby granted unto the said John B. Goodrich and Wm. E. Rutledge or the survivor of them, their heirs, executors administrators or the assigns forever. Upon trust, nevertheless that the said John B. Goodrich and Wm. E. Rutledge or either of them shall as soon as either or both of them conveniently warrant after the bond shall become due after advertising the time and place of the sale of the before mentioned land and other property at the courthouse door of the above mentioned county of Montgomery also at one or more public places in the Town of Blacksburg proceed to sell the same to the highest bidder for the best prices that can be obtained in cash of the monies arising from the sale in the first place to pay and satisfy all the reasonable charges for inventory and recording this deed also what may attend the sale aforesaid and then pay the said bond above is sued of the monies arising from auctions aforesaid to be paid to the said Charles Grissom, his heirs, executors, administrators, or assigns. Goodrich and William Rutledge Trustees for John Barger was acknowledged in court by Grissom and Goodrich to be their act and deed and continued for full acknowledgment at February Court 1822. The same was further acknowledged by the said Rutledge to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
