Harding/Harding Indenture, 1786 This Indenture made this fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-six between John Harding and Nancy, his wife, on the one part, and Henry Harding on the other part, both of Montgomery County and state of Virginia witnesseth that the said John Harding and Nancy, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum One hundred pounds, current money of Virginia, to him in hand paid the weight whereof they the said John & Nancy Harding doth hereby acknowledge that they the said John & Nancy Harding doth hereby give, grant, bargain & sell and doth by these presents give, grant, bargain sell a lien ??? and confirm unto the aforesaid Henry Harding, his heirs or assigns, one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid being the messuage whereon the said Henry Harding now lives, containing by estimation Three hundred acres be the same, more or less, being bounded in manner and form following to wit: Beginning at a sycamore tree on the West branch of Little Reed Island Creek a corner of Richard Ellis & running thence up a valley along a line of marked trees made by mutual consent of said John Harding and said Richard Ellis to Fugate's line, now Adams', thence with his, turning to the left to Whitlock's line, thence with said Whitlock's line to two white oaks on the top of a hill thence leaving Whitlock's, running South sixty degrees East one hundred and forty-four poles crossing said Creek to a white oak and dogwood saplings, North twenty-five degrees East one hundred and fifty-six poles to two white oaks on a hillside, thence North forty-two degrees East to the aforementioned Creek thence up the same crossing over the first station unto the aforesaid Henry Harding, his heirs and assigns forever. To have and to hold the said Messuage and tract of land to their own proper use and behoof free from the claim, challenge or demand of any person or persons whatsoever with all and singular its priviledges and appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto the said Henry Harding, his heirs & assigns forever. And further the said Page 2 John & Nancy Harding for themselves, their heirs, Executors, Administators doth covenent to and agree with the aforesaid Henry Harding, his heirs and assigns, that they the aforesaid John & Nancy Harding will and doth by these presents warrant and forever defend the same. In witness where of they the said John & Nancy Harding hereunto set their names and affixed their seals this day & year above written. The above deed of bargain & sale with the living & signer(?) was acknowledged by the said John and upon the passing examination of Nancy, his wife, she relinquishes her right of dower & the same is ordered to be recorded. Teste Abram Trigg, Clerk, Montgomery County Memorandum that the day & year within written, full quiet and peaceable possession of living & signer was given & made by the aforesaid John & Nancy Harding unto the within named Henry Harding according to the full purpose, true intent & meaning of the within indenture and the right of the within consideration is here again acknowledged.
