Patton/Gressham Lease, 1779 - Montgomery Co. VA (Deed Book A Montgomery Co., VA. 1773-1789 Reel 1 Page 194 Library of Virginia) This Indenture made the Twenty fourth day of March One Thousand seven hundred and seventy nine between William Thompson and William Preston only acting Executors of the last will and Testament of James Patton deceased late of Augusta County, of the one part and Robert Gressham of the other part. Witnesseth, that for and in consideration of the sum of Five Shillings by the said Robert Gressham, to the said William Preston and Wm. Thompson before the Sealing and delivery hereof they, the said William Thompson and Wm. Preston pursuant to the powers to them given in and by the last will and Testament of the said James Patton have granted, bargained and Sold and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell unto the said Robert Gressham one certain Tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and Seventy five acres. Eithersome more of less lying and being in the County of Montgomery part of a large Tract of land granted to the said James Patton by letter patent bearing date the XXth day of June MDCCLIII beginning at a black oak saplin by a spring and running thence South sixty seven degrees west one hundred and Thirty Poles to two hickory saplins Thence North Two hundred and Thirty Poles to a hickory and white oak saplins by a spring head Thence South Thirty five Degrees East one hundred poles to two chesnuts Thence North Seventy degrees East one hundred and sixty four Poles to a white oak in a valley. Thence South seventeen degrees East eighty eight Poles to two black oaks. Thence South sixty degrees West one hundred and forty Poles to the beginning. To have and to hold the said lands and premisses with the appurtenances unto the said Robert Gresham his Executors and Administrators for the Term of one year from the day of the date hereof, to the End that by virtue of these presents, and of the Statute for Transferring Uses into possession, the said Grisham may be in possession of the said lands and premisses as to be able to take and accept assign and release of the Reversion and Inheritance thereof to him and heirs forever.
