The date and place of his birth, and the names of his parents are not given in his application. He enlisted while residing in Fincastle County, which was later Montgomery County, about March 1, 1777. He served as a private under Captains James Knox and Woodfall, and under Colonels Muhlenberg, Bowman, and Neville, in Virginia troops. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth, and was discharged at the surrender of Cornwallis. He then returned to Montgomery County. He stated that he had never married.
