1st w/o Capt Washington Smith.

Birth: 2nd of five known children in Gates county, North Carolina.

The village of Somerton began in the 17th century when Sir Thomas Jernigan (also 
spelled Jarnigan) of Somerleyton, Suffolk county, England came to Virginia and 
was granted 250 acres in what now is Suffolk. New Norfolk County is said to have 
been formed in 1636 from that part of Elizabeth City County lying to the south 
of Hampton Roads, and extinguished in 1637 by the formation of Lower Norfolk and 
Upper Norfolk Counties. Upper Norfolk County was extinguished in 1643 when 
Nansemond County was organized following legislation the previous year. My 10th 
great,grandfather, <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?
page=gr&GRid=45665124">Robert Boggus</a>, is documented 1 April 1644 as living 
in the then newly created Nansemond county.

She married and lived with Washington boring him seven known children in 
Somerton, Nansemond county, Virginia where she died and is buried.

Death: in Somerton, Nansemond county, Virginia. <i>written is: she died 4th 
January 1816 leaving six children, one two week old daughter, <b>HOWEVER</b>, 
the same book,</i> <b>Bible Records of Suffolk & Nansemond County, Virginia:</b> 
<i>by <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?
page=gr&GRid=17469566">Fillmore Norfleet</a> published in 2009, reveals that 
last daughter born 21 May 1816</i>. ~ ~ After due consideration, I believe 
<b>June</b> was copied as <b>January</b> in the publication, ~ ~ You decide 
which is correct!

Father: Samuel Barron Cunningham b: 26 JUL 1757 Elizabeth City, Pasouotank 
county, North Carolina.
Mother: Margaret Riddick b: 3 NOV 1860 Nansemond county,  Virginia, <i>(mother's 
maiden name, Tembte)</i>.

Burial in the private, now unknown, cemetery in Somerton, possibly (?) the 
<i>Smith Family cemetery</i> located between son Robert's, later built, home 
(now 8441 Arthur drive) and the then Methodist church across street from 8442 
Arthur drive.

Marriage: Washington Smith b: 11 AUG 1772 in Virginia.
Married: 18 DEC 1798 Gates county, North Carolina.

Anne Cunningham Smith b: 21 MAY 1816 Somerton, Nansemond county, Virginia
