Nansemond County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Land Records 
     Francis MAULDEN, patent, 400 acres, 1 Nov 1637 

              To all to whome these p'sents shall come I S.r John HarVy 
 Francis      K.t Govern.r &c doe w.th the consent of the Councell of 
  Maulden     State accordingly give and grannt Unto Francis 
   400        Maulden fower hundred acres of land Scituate lying 
              and being in Nansamund river on the North Side 
    Exm:d     thereof begining at a reedy branch and from thence 
              extending in breadth Up the Said river abutting South 
              East Upon an Island comonly called dumpling Island 
              and North west into the woods The Said fower hundred 
              acres of land being due Unto the Said Francis 
              Maulden as followeth (Vizt ) fiftie acres for his owne 
              p'sonall Adventure fiftie acres for the p'sonall Adventure 
              of his wife Katherine Maulden and three hundred 
              acres by and for the transportac'on at his owne p'per 
              costs and charges of Six p'sons into this Colony whose 
              names are in the Records menc'oned Under this 
              pattent To have and to hold &c dated the first day 
              of November 1637 Ut in al˙s

[This tract had been granted 25 Nov 1636 (ibid, p. 400) by Gov. John West. 
 It is unclear why this duplicate patent was issued, but the legitimacy of 
 West's tenure may have been in question. West was elected by the Council as 
 successor to Sir John Harvey, and Harvey was reinstated by the Crown in 1637.
 The transportees for whom Maulden claimed headrights are given under the first 
 patent.]
