Nansemond County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Land Records 
     John GARRETT, patent, 400 acres, 22 May 1642 

             To all to whome these p'sents shall come I S.r William 
             Berkeley K.t Govern.r &.c  whereas &.c  Now Know 
John Garrett yee that I the Said S.r William Berkeley  K.t doe w.th 
             ["the consent of" struck] the Councell of State accordingly give 
             and grannt Unto John Garrett his heires or assignes 
             fower hundred acres of land being in the Upper Norfolke 
             Upon the head of a Creeke or branch called the Indian 
             Creeke which yssueth from a Westerne branch of 
             Nansimund river begining at a marked pockecory 
             adjoyning on and below a p'cell of Land of William 
             Hatfeilds  running for length North North East over a 
             Reedy swamp by a black wallnutt to s Small oake 
             ["three" struck] five hundred and twentie pole and for breadth to 
             the aforemenc'oned pockecory West North west twoe 
    Exm:d    hundred pole by the maine branch Side to a marked 
             beech standing on the edge of a Valley and for length 
             North North East three hundred and twenty pole by a white 
             oake to a marked pochecory standing on the Side of a reedy 
             swampe again The Said fower hundred acres of Land being due 
             Unto him the Said John Garrett by and for the transporta 
             =c'on of eight Serverall p'sons into this Colony  To have and 
             to hold &.c To bee held &.c Yeilding and paying Unto o.r 
             Said Soveraigne Lord the King his heires and Successo.rs 
             for every fiftie acres of Land herein by these p'sents - 
             given and grannted yearely at the feast of S.t Michael 
             the Arch'ell the fee rent of one shilling  which paym.t is 
             to bee made Seaven yeares after the date of this pattent 
             and not before Provided &.c Given &.c  this twoe and 
             twentieth of May Anno dom'i 1642
