SHEPHERD Nansemond Co., VA, Deed Book 40, age 238 January 15, 1898 * * * * * * * * * * This deed made this 13th day of January, 1898, between John Shepherd of the County of Isle of Wight, State of Virginia party of the first part and Jane R. Shepherd of the said County and State party of the second part, Witnesseth: That for and in consideration of the sum of thirteen hundred (1300.00) dollars the said party of the first part doth grant unto the said party of the second part with general warranty the following property, to-wit: All that certain lot or parcel of land situated on the east side of North Street in the Town of Suffolk in Nansemond County, Virginia fronting on said street fifty (50) feet, and running back eastward therefrom on the north side ninety-four (94) feet and on the south side one hundred (100) feet to the land of Sarah C. Nurney and bounded on the north by the land of George T. Holland, on the east by the land of Sarah C. Nurney, on the south by the land of Martha J. Johnson and on the west by the said street and being forty-six (46) feet and eight (8) inches wide across the rear end and being part of the land conveyed to the said John Shepherd by deed from Burwell Riddick and wife dated 20th day of Jany. 1894 and duly recorded in the Clerks Office of Nansemond County, Virginia in deed book #34 page 115. 2nd all that certain lot of land in the Town of Suffolk, County of Nansemond, Virginia, and bounded as follows: commencing at south west corner of what is known as Chestnut and Market Streets in said town and thence running North along said Chestnut Street sixty six (66) feet thence westwardly ninety (90) feet to the land of John F. Pinner thence south sixty four (64) feet to Market Street, thence eastwardly eighty six (86) feet to the beginning and being a part of what is known as the Harrison land and conveyed to the said John Shepherd by Merritt Briggs, trustee by deed which is duly recorded in the Clerks Office, Nansemond County, Virginia in deed book 34 page 117, and, 3rd. All that certain piece or parcel of land situate on the south side of Wilson Avenue in the town of Suffolk, in the County of Nansemond, Virginia and bounded and described as follows; viz, beginning at the northwest corner of the lot belonging to the Estate of R. C. Crumpler dec'd formerly owned by Rebecca Vicks on said avenue and running thence westwardly along and fronting on said avenue Forty (40) feet to the lot formerly owned or at present owned by Rufus E. Potter, thence running Southwardly along said Potter's line or the line of the last mentioned lot one hundred and one (101) feet and seven (7) inches, thence running Eastwardly parallel with said Wilson Avenue forty (40) feet to the lot of the said the Estate of R. C. Crumpler, dec'd and thence running along said Crumpler land or lot one hundred and one (101) feet and seven (7) inches to Wilson Avenue, at the point of beginning, the said lot being bounded on the North by said Wilson Avenue, East by the lot of the said estate of R.C. Crumpler, dec'd, South by the lot of J. Letcher Gay and West by the lot owned or formerly owned by Rufus E. Potter, together with all and singular the appurtenances belonging to the said lot; the said property was conveyed to the said John Shepherd by deed from Burwell Riddick and wife which is duly recorded in the Clerk's Office of Nansemond County, Virginia, in (in) deed book #26 page 641 and dated on 11th day of December, 1893, the said grantor covenants that he has the right to convey the said land to the grantee, that the grantee shall have quiet possession of said land free from all encumbrances and that he, the said party of the first part will execute such further assurances of said land as may be requisite. Davis a Justice of the peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do certify that John Shepherd, whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date on the 13th day of January, 1898, has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid.
