NANSEMOND COUNTY, VA - MILITARY - Bray Baines, War of 1812 Pension Application ----¤¤¤---- DECLARATION OF SURVIVING SOLDIER FOR PENSION ACT OF FEBRUARY 14, 1871 STATE OF VIRGINIA } NANSEMOND COUNTY } SS. On this _____ day of March, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personally appeared before me (1) I. D. Brady, Clerk of the Court of Hastings, a court of record within and for the City of Portsmouth and State aforesaid (2) Bray Baines, aged 79 years, a resident of the County of Nansemond, and State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to lay, declares that he is not married: (3) that his wife’s name was Lavinia Harrell to whom he was married at Nansemond County on the _____ day of _____ 1840; that he served the full period of sixty days in the (4) Military Service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Bray Baines who (5) was drafted in Captain Arthur Smith’s Company and transferred to Lacock’s Company, Col. Joseph Riddick’s Regiment, at Suffolk Nansemond County in the State of Virginia, on the _____ day of _____ 1813, and was honorably discharged at Nansemond County on the _____ day of _____ 1813; that (6) served at Suffolk, at Craney Island & at the “Poplars” as a private. He received Bounty Land but number and under what act issued not recollected, that he at no time, during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid and comfort, or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority of pretended authority in hostility to the United States; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; (7) that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of he Act of February 14,1871; and he hereby constitutes and appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, CHARLES C. TUCKER, of Washington, D.C. his true and lawful Attorney, to prosecute this claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his post office is at Suffolk, County of Nansemond, State of Virginia, and that his domicil or place of abode is in said county. Length of service, 60 days. Claimant declares he is not a pensioner under any previous act. Name not on list of pensioners. Loyalty, claimant’s averment and testimony of, Shem Loomis and James N. Cone whose credibility is certified to by Jos. H. Clement, P.M. Oath to support the Constitution of the United States subscribed.
