Holland, postmistress at Buckhorn, Va., refuses to surrender the office to her successor. W.T. Barrett recently was commissioned as postmaster, but when be sought to succeed she declined to turn over the office. Later Barrett got a government order for the custodianship of the office, but Mrs. Holland again refused to surrender, saying she was acting upon the advice of counsel. Suffolk, Va., (Special). - A peculiar state of affairs exists as to the postmastership of the office of Buckhorn, Va. W.T. Barrett recently was commissioned as postmaster, but when he called on Mrs. M.H. Holland, whom he sought to succeed, she declined to turn over the office. Mrs. Holland remains in control. ****************************************************************************** *Additional information: The postmistress seems to be Mary M. (HINES; Mrs. Robert J.) HOLLAND. She & widower Robert m. 22 Aug 1880 (Nansemond #98). They appear in the 1900 Census in Chuckatuck Dist., Nansemond Co., on Owned Free Farm #113; she was b. May 1865, and 6 of her 9 children were living. They appear in the 1910 Census in Chuckatuck Dist., on Owned Free Farm #11; she was age 47, and 8 of her 10 children were living; it gives this as the 1st marriage for both. Her replacement seems to be Walter Thomas BARRETT (1874 - 1939). He appears as a merchant in the 1900 Census in Windsor Dist., Isle of Wight Co. He appears as a peanut factory shipping clerk in the 1910 Census, at 122 Wellons St., Suffolk; it gives him and his wife as both widowed. They are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk - Block K, Lot 4.
