Dr. Richardson Joyner, Nansemond County medical examiner, said Saturday that Johnnie Earl Adams, a varsity basketball player for John Yeates High School, had died from the wound only a short while before he was found in his car at Chuckatuck. A .22 rifle was found on the seat beside the youth, the examiner said, and a ballistic check is being made. The body was sent to the chief medical examiner in Norfolk for autopsy. He was the son of Joseph E. Adams Jr. and Mrs. Myrtle Mae Twine Adams of 1662 Wilroy Rd. Dr. Joyner said that information available so far indicated the youth and several other young people had been together after a basketball game Friday night in which young Adams participated, and that the youth had taken the others to their homes, dropping off the last one about 11:45 p.m. When young Adams did not come home Friday night, Dr. Joyner said, his mother and one of his friends began searching for him, finding him on a side street in Chuckatuck about 9 a.m. Saturday, slumped in his car. Investigation by the Nansemond County Sheriff's Dept. continues. A native of Suffolk, he was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church, the Young People's Sunday School Class and the Training Union of the church. At John Yeates, besides being a member of the basketball squad, he was a member of the Varsity Club. In addition to his parents, surviving are two sisters, Miss Brenda Sue Adams and Miss Patricia Ann Adams; three brothers, Glenn Michael Adams, Randy Wayne Adams and Billy Ray Adams, all of the home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Twine of Aulander, N.C.; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ellie H. Adams of Suffolk. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wilroy Baptist Church by the Rev. J.C. Mitchell, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The body will be taken from I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home to the church at 1 p.m. [photo, cationed:] JOHNNIE E.
