H.E. Cromer and Dr. W.W. Staley. The choir of the Main Street Methodist Church sang "Throw Out the Life Line" and "Rock of Ages." There were many beautiful floral offerings. Active pallbearers were G. Lloyd Bell, J.T. Withers, A.H. Hargrave, L.H. Norfleet, J.T. Shepherd, A.D. Bowen, Sr., Hutson Councill, F.E. Crowley. Other members of the Vaughan-Causey Camp Spanish-American War veterans, and friends and neighbors were honorary. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery. D.Cert. 23873 (Suffolk #328) gives son of Frank ALFORD, b. Norfolk, & Susan C. STRANGE, b. Camden Co., NC. Preston & Laura GRIGGS, m. 10 Oct 1888 in Gates Co., NC. He appears with his parents in the 1900 Census - 9 Bank St., Suffolk - as married 11 years, but Laura is not shown. Preston served in Co. F, 4th VA Infantry - the Suffolk unit that fought in the Spanish-American War & WW-I. He applied for an Invalid pension 11 May 1926 (App. #1538.742; Cert. A-11-16-28). His mother applied for a continuation of that pension 15 Nov 1930 (App. #1680.951). His father was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. B, 19th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery, and later as a clerk in the Richmond Commissary. Their paternal aunt was Sarah E. (ALFORD) WADSWORTH; their paternal grandfather was Benjamin Ward ALFORD.
