Baker is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Slifton [sic; Clifton Baker, of R.F.D. 1, Suffolk; a brother, Clifton Baker, of the same address; and a grandmother, Mrs. Wertley Baker, of Newport News. Killed Friday Night The youth was killed about 7:30 p.m. Friday when his 1950 Ford sedan collided with another car on Route 32, four miles north of Whaleyville. According to State Trooper William O'Brien, Baker struck the rear of the other vehicle after it had slowed down to make a right turn into Route 668. Both were headed south. The impact capsized Baker’s car and hurled both vehicles into the roadside ditch. The driver of the other car, James Edward Copeland, Negro, of Route 1, Whaleyville, was treated at a local hospital for an injured right knee, and later released, according to Trooper O’Brien. Copeland’s wife, Mrs. Mattie B. Copeland, a passenger in the 1938 Ford sedan, entered Community Hospital yesterday for treatment of a broken leg, suffered in the wreck. Both cars were a total loss, according to O’Brien. Copeland was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a technical charge in all fatal accidents. The case hearing was set for next Thursday in Nansemond County Trial Justice Court. ****************************************************************************** Gates Boy Rode In Death Vehicle A Gates, N.C. youth was riding in the car in which Calvin Stuart Baker, 20-year old Nansemond farmer, was killed Friday night police learned yesterday. Clyde Baker, Jr., about 20, said to be a cousin of the dead man, reported to the county jail yesterday that he had been involved in the accident. He escaped with an injured arm, which a county doctor treated, he said. State Trooper W.G. O'Brien commented he didn't see how young Baker survived the wreck. The death car was "completely wrecked," he said. Not Immediately Located O’Brien, investigating the crash Friday night, was told of a passenger in the Baker car, but was unable to locate anyone. Previously, the only version of the incident came from James Edward Copeland, Negro, of Route 1, Whaleyville, driver of the second car. He told O'Brien that Baker's vehicle struck the rear of his car as he was slowing to make a turn off of Route 32. This happened 7:30 p. m. Friday about four miles north of Whaleyville. Now it appears possible that Clyde Baker, who works in a basket factory near Suffolk, will be able to add an eye-witness account at the accident hearing this Thursday morning in Nansemond County Trial Justice Court.
