George Humphrey Baker, Jr., 78, of 1549 Wilkins Dr., died March 8, 1988, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. A native of Tyner, N.C., he was the son of the late George Humphrey Baker Sr. and Emma Elliott Baker. He was a teacher and principal for 40 years, and had graduated from Wake Forest University. He was a teacher and principal in North Carolina before coming to Suffolk. Here, he was principal at the old William J. Jones Elementary School in Whaleyville, and later a math teacher at John Yeates High School in Suffolk. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, where he taught the Mary Sue Brittle Sunday School Class and the Ladies Star Class. He was also a member of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club. Survivors include his wife, Betty Duke Baker; three daughters, Mary Frances Batts of Cary, N.C., Angela B. Rose of Norfolk and Betty Jean Fowler of Suffolk; a son Donald E. Baker of Laurel, Md.; four sisters, hazel B. Hofler of Sunbury, N.C., Edith B. Blancard of Hobbsville, N.C., and Wilma B. Williams and Minnie B. Baker, both of Norfolk; two brothers, Locke Baker and James Baker, both of Tyner; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Hill Funeral Home by Dr. Merle Correll. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet today from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and at other times will be at the residence.
