Baker Jr. Is Dead at 60 Robert Newton Baker Jr., 60, a partner and manager of the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home for the past 27 years, died at 2:55 a.m. today (Thursday) in his home, 509 W. Washington St., after a long illness. The husband of Mrs. Allie Oliver Baker, he was the son of Mrs. Ethel Ames Baker of Suffolk and the late Robert Newton Baker Sr. He succeeded his late father as manager of the Suffolk funeral home in 1940. Besides his business interests, Baker was active in church and community affairs here and was particularly interested in those involving the Old Dominion Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. For his contributions to scouting, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1966. Baker was a member of Main Street Methodist Church and was a member and past chairman of its Official Board. He was a lay member of the Annual Conference and served as a trustee of the church and as chairman of the Commission on Stewardship and Finance. He was also a past District Steward, chairman of the church's Boy Scout Troop Committee, a member of the Pastorial Relations Committee, and a member of the Virginia Conference Board of Missions of the Methodist Church. He was a member of the National Selected Morticians, the National Funeral Directors Association; was past president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and served nine years as its secretary and treasurer. He was also a member of the Tidewater Funeral Directors and has served as a past president and as secretary and treasurer 20 years. He was a graduate of Suffolk High School and Virginia Military Institute, with a degree in electrical engineering, and was a member of the VMI Alumni Association. He was a member of the Advisory Board of Seaboard Citizens National Bank, the Rogers Deer Club, Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 340; Portsmouth Commandery No. 5, Knights Templar Khedive Temple; Suffolk Shrine Club, Suffolk Rotary Club, and was on the Executive Board of the Old Dominion Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Virginia and Suffolk-Nansemond Chamber of Commerces and Lodge No. 685, B.P.O. Elks. Besides his wife and mother, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Allie Baker Brueggeman of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Roberta Baker Powell of Suffolk, Mrs. Lynn Baker Baines of Syracuse, N.Y.; and one son, Robert N. Baker III of Suffolk; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Main Street Methodist Church by the Rev. John Teter, pastor. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken from the Baker Funeral Home to the church at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
