[...] Capt. Richard Henry Baker, father of the late James R. Baker, was born June 14, 1826, and died at his residence near Savage Crossing, Nansemond county, Va., 5:30 a.m., May 25, 1901. He had come close to 75 years. Malaria and grippe in the winter had developed into asthma and heart trouble and he lingered till death set him free from pain. One brother and one sister survive him. His wife, who has been dead several years, was Miss Elizabeth Ann Stallings. They had nine children. Three sons passed on before him, and three sons and daughters survive him. He has had eleven grandchildren, seven of whom are dead. Of the twenty children and grandchildren combined, ten are gone and ten abide. All of the immediate family were present at the funeral services at 3 p.m. Sunday. A large gathering of friends and neighbors crowded the house and yard while I tried to comfort the mourning ones from the Word of God. He lived and died near the old homestead. He was loved by his family tenderly and was devoted to home and loved ones. He expressed his willingness to depart and be with his Saviour. He had many friends who drop a tear with his weeping family. I have buried eleven members of the Baker family out of four generations, embracing ages from 92 down to infancy. The history of any family is the rocking of cradles, the digging of graves, the rending of hearts, and the hopes of reunion. All the happiest and saddest experiences blend in the family and turn us heavenward in our aspirations. W.W. STALEY. Capt. Richard Henry BAKER, justice, teacher & farmer, b. 14 Jun 1826, d. 25 May 1901, at home, near Savage Crossing, interred in the family cemetery*, near Nurneyville, 26 May 1901 *Additional information: Site not known (Feb 2026) to the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project.
