Butts, a hero of the Civil War and one of the most prominent and honored citizens of Nansemond county, died suddenly Friday night while he was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Henry Powell, 200 Boulevard, Port Norfolk. The cause was heart failure and he was in his seventieth year. He left his home in Chuckatuck Friday and apparently in the best of health. For a week he had been unwell and while in Suffolk en route to Port Norfolk consulted a physician. He was one of the most prominent citizens of Nansemond county and had often been honored by his fellow citizens. He was born in 1843 and served with distinction in the war between the States as a member of the Thirteenth cavalry, Pickett's division. He was studying law at the University of Virginia when the war broke out and ran away in his senior year to enlist in the Confederate army. Because his brother, who was a doctor, was killed during the war he changed his profession, graduating as an M.D. from a Richmond medical school in 1867. For 40 years he practiced his profession, retiring five years ago. For many years he was treasurer of Nansemond county, his term expiring last January, and was chairman of the Board of Supervisors for a number of years. He was also president of the Board of Visitors of the State School for the Deaf and Dumb at Staunton for 18 years, having been appointed by each governor in succession during that time. At the time of his death he was a member of the Tom Smith Camp, U.C.V., Suffolk, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie Denson Butts; three daughters, Mrs. Z.H. Powell, of Port Norfolk; Mrs. C.A. Baker, of Ocean View, and Mrs. J.H. Branch, and a sister, Mrs. Eudora Kilby, and three grandchildren.
