HARRIETT BENSON [sic; DENSON] BUTTS Mrs. Harriet Denson Butts, widow of the late Dr. George W. Butts, and daughter of R.H.B. and Sarah Denson, died yesterday at noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Branch, 222 North street. She was a native of Nansemond county and spent all of her married life of 47 years in Chuckatuck. Her husband preceded her to the grave just two years ago, and since his death she had made her home with her children, Mrs. Z.H. Powell of Port Norfolk, Mrs. C.A. Baker of Ocean View, and Mrs. J.H. Branch in North street, this city. Mrs. Butts was a woman of a beautiful Christian character and was one the oldest members of Wesley Chapel, Chuckatuck. The funeral service will take place a at 12 o'clock tomorrow in the Methodist church, Chuckatuck. The funeral party will leave Portsmouth on the 9:25 Seaboard train for Suffolk and from there to Chuckatuck. ****************************************************************************** MORTUARY MRS. HARRIET DENSON BUTTS The funeral service of Mrs. Harriet Denson Butts, widow of Dr. George W. Butts, who died last Monday in the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Branch, 222 North street, this city, will take place at 12 o'clock today in the Methodist church, Chuckatuck, Va. The funeral party will leave this city at 9:25 o'clock this morning over the Seaboard Air Line Railway for Suffolk, driving from that city to Chuckatuck. ****************************************************************************** MORTUARY MRS. Butts were forwarded yesterday morning over the Seaboard Air Line to Chuckatuck, Va., where the funeral services and interment took place yesterday afternoon. ****************************************************************************** MRS. HARRIET B. [sic; D.] BUTTS Suffolk, Va., Aug. 26. - The funeral of Mrs. Harriett Benson [sic; Denson] Butts, widow of the late Dr. George W. Butts, was held at the Methodist church, Chuckatuck, today. Mrs. Butts died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Branch in North street, Portsmouth. The pall-bearers were: Active, W.C. Whitney, J.H. Branch, C.A. Baker, Z.H. Powell, W.J. Cotton, E.F. Cotton, and G.E. Bunting; Honorary, C.T. Minton, C.B. Godwin, W.A. King, James Latimer, John King, L.W. Davis, N.B. Peck, T.J. Saunders and Job Holland. Mrs. Butts was a native of Nansemond county, and resided in Chuckatuck 47 years. She was one of the oldest members of Wesley Chapel. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. C.A. Baker of Ocean View, Mrs. Z.H. Powell of Port Norfolk, and Mrs. J.H. DENSON, Jr., of the Clyde Line steamship "Goldsborough," fell from the side of his ship on the night of 24 Nov 1902 in Philadelphia harbor and drowned, and his body was recovered 1 Dec 1902. An article appeared in the "Virginian-Pilot" Dec. 4, 1902, p. 2. He was buried by his wife Anna (1847 - 1885) in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.
