Butler, who died at his home here on Tuesday, April 7, 1892, at the age of 55 years. He came to Suffolk to live at the close of the Civil War, and engaged in the business of manufacturing vehicles such as buggies, phaetons, carts and wagons, and his plant turned out many of the outfits for logging. His log carriers were considered the best on the market, and the establishment dates back in the business history, perhaps, making his plant the oldest in Suffolk, (which business, by the way, is still in continuous operation). He was a native of Isle of Wight county. Mr. Butler one time served the town as a councilman, and was a member of Nansemond Lodge No. 2090 Knights of Honor. During his lifetime as a citizen of Suffolk accumulated a substantial lot of real estate, much of which still remains in the family. Surviving him at his death, were a widow, three sons, and two daughters, the sons being John M., Harvey M., and Frank E., the daughters being Mrs. Annie Ballance and Miss Emily Butler. BUSINESS SUSPENDS There was a suspension of the larger business places of the town during the funeral exercises as a mark of respect to his memory. The funeral service was held from the Baptist church on April 8, 1892, and the Rev. H.A. Bagby officiated, assisted by the Rev. W.W. Staley. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery. The pall-bearers were J.H. Macleary, M.F. Lloyd, George W. Nurney, D.C. Harrell, H.W. Bradshaw and J.C. Freeny.
